Cassandra, Maureen and Sarah Rees Brennan at London’s signing.

‘Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?’
Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson were doing a fancy event in London, so I came to see them and cheer them on. It was the FANCIEST EVENT EVER: the theatre was all red and gold. I sat in a box with Josh Lewis and clapped at all the funny and murderous things Cassie and Maureen said.
And I was tossed up a microphone so I could answer a question from a lovely lady too. ;) I felt most special.
AND, at the signing table, Foyle’s bookshop had some copies of my books, and people wanted me to sign them. I was massively surprised, and my hair was not straightened and my dress was tied wrong and I was bibbling about fictional characters making out…
SARAH: The point of all art!
MAUREEN: Only to you, Sarah.
… but it was fantastic. ;) Everyone was wonderful. And if anyone wants signed sets of my books, they’re at Foyle’s. Same with signed MAUREEN JOHNSONS! A much more exciting prospect.
Thanks to all for BEING WONDERFUL!

THAT WAS ME. I WAS THE LOVELY LADY WITH THE QUESTION. I feel so special now. :)
This was a freaking fantastic event. Even though I almost missed my train because the signing queue was so long, it was totally worth it.

As excited as I am for this movie, this photoset pisses me off so much. All the male superheros get kickass poses in the middle of battle with their trademark weapons, and what does Black Widow get? A boob shot. A fucking boob shot. This is the superhero who has bracelets that will send 30,000 volts through you, a suit that allows her to climb walls, and extensive expertise in knives and firearms. Where the fuck is any of that? Ugh…

Fuck all the motherfucking racist Hunger Games fans.

How fucking dare you claim to be less sad about the death of a child because she’s black. Fuck that. Like I barely want to see the movie anymore if it means I have so sit next to some racist assholes.

We have a big fucking problem in this…

This. All of this. I just can’t fathom how the people saying these things think it’s actually okay. Bull-fucking-shit.

The wave of anti-Kony posts has been really amazing to see, but I think it’s good to remember that 1) the LRA probably isn’t going to fall by the end of this year, and 2) the only way it will fall is if we keep the pressure on and not let this die out like most internet campaigns. Also, it’s good to remember that there is still a ton of shit going on in the world that could use the online momentum Kony 2012 has gotten. The fact that many, if not most, of the comments on this video are about Kony really illustrates how the internet tends to work - latch on to what’s popular, yell about it for a little while, and then let it fade away. Absolutely keep the pressure on Kony, but don’t do it at the expense of Syria, Libya, or even the shit going on in our own government.

Why yes, that is Rick Santorum’s face made out of gay porn.

Oh. My. God.

Sometimes, I have great hope for this world.

That’s insanely perfect.

In honor of that whole Valentine’s thing…
Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace Lancaster from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
Finally got my copy after having sent it too the wrong address (blast!) and read it this week. Such terribly lovable characters and beautiful writing. Thank you Mr. Green.

All my creys.

"

I’ve had librarians say to me, “People in my school don’t agree with homosexuality, so it’s difficult to have your book on the shelves.” Here’s the thing: Being gay is not an issue, it is an identity. It is not something that you can agree or disagree with. It is a fact, and must be defended and represented as a fact.

To use another part of my identity as an example: if someone said to me, “I’m sorry, but we can’t carry that book because it’s so Jewish and some people in my school don’t agree with Jewish culture,” I would protest until I reached my last gasp. Prohibiting gay books is just as abhorrent…

Discrimination is not a legitimate point of view. Silencing books silences the readers who need them most. And silencing these readers can have dire, tragic consequences. Never forget who these readers are. They are just as curious and anxious about life as any other teenager.

SERIOUSLY!  I’m sick of LGBTQ culture being treated as just some political issue.  Queer people aren’t just a handful of people who want to get married, okay?  We’re real, and we’re fucking important, and we need to be represented accurately and positively in the media and on the book shelf, especially in schools, where kids are still discovering who they are and maybe they feel really alone and they need a book they can relate to …

fuckyeahslampoems:

Culturally-diversified biracial girl with

a small diamond nose ring and a pretty smile
poses besides the words
“Women Deserve Better”.

and I almost let her non-threatening grin
begin to infiltrate my psyche
until I read the unlikely small print
at the bottom of the ad:
Sponsored by the US Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities
and the Knights of Columbus

On a bus
in a city
with a population of 553,000,
4 teenage mothers on the bus with me,
1 Latina woman with 3 children under 3
and no signs of a daddy.

One sixteen year old black girl
standing in 22-degree weather
with only a sweater
a book bag
and a bassinette,
with an infant that ain’t even four weeks yet
tell me that Yes ….
Women do deserve better.

Women deserve better
than public transportation rhetoric
from the same people who
won’t give that teenage mother
a ride to the next transit.
Won’t let you talk to their kids about safer sex
Have never had to listen as the door SLAMS
behind the man who adamantly says,
“That shit” ain’t his
leaving her to wonder how she’ll raise this kid.

Women deserve better
than the 300 dollars TANF and AFC
will provide that family of three
or the 6 dollar an hour job at KFC
with no benefits for her new baby
or the college degree she may never see
because you can’t have infants at the university

Women deserve better
than lip service paid for by politicians
who have no alternatives to abortion
though I am sure
right this moment one of their seventeen year old daughters
is sitting in a clinic lobby
sobbing quietly and anonymously
praying parents don’t find out
or will be waiting for mom to pick her up because research shows
that out-of-wedlock childbirth doesn’t look good on political polls and
Daddy ain’t having that.

Women deserve better
than backwards governmental policies
that don’t want to pay
for welfare for kids
or health care for kids
or child care for kids
Don’t want to pay living wages to working mothers,
Don’t want to make men who only want to be last night’s lovers
responsible for the semen they lay.

Flat out don’t want to pay for SHIT
but want to control the woman who’s having it.
Acting outraged at abortion.
Well I’m outraged
that they want us to believe
that they believe
that women deserve better.

The Vatican won’t prosecute pedophile priests
But I decide I’m not ready for motherhood
and it’s condemnation for me
These are the same people who won’t support
national condom distribution to prevent teenage pregnancy.
But women deserve better.

Women deserve better
than back-alley surgeries
that leave our wombs barren and empty.
Deserve better
than organizations bearing the name
of land-stealing racist rapists
funding million dollar campaigns on subway trains
with no money to give these women
while balding middle-aged white men
tell us what to do with our bodies
while they wage wars and kill other people’s babies

So maybe women deserve better
than propaganda and lies
to get into office
Propaganda and lies
to get into panties
to get out of court
to get out of paying child support

Get the fuck out of our decisions
and give us back our voice
Women do deserve better
Women deserve choice
